How Many Days for a Çanakkale Tour? Day Trip or Overnight Stay?

If you only want to see the martyrs' cemeteries and memorials on the Gallipoli Peninsula, a day trip from Istanbul leaving overnight is enough. If you also want to see Troy, Assos and Çanakkale city centre, or limit overnight travel to a single journey, you need to set aside at least 1 night, 2 days. The question that decides it is not only 'What do I want to see?' but also 'How much tiredness can my group take?'.
What is there in Çanakkale, and how much time does it need?
When planning Çanakkale, dividing the area into four parts makes things easier:
- Gallipoli Peninsula: Martyrs' cemeteries, fortifications, memorials, Anzac Cove and Conkbayırı. Touring the main sites with a guide takes almost a full day.
- Çanakkale city centre: Çimenlik Castle, the Naval Museum, the minelayer Nusret, the Archaeological Museum and the Aynalı Çarşı (Mirrored Bazaar). A few hours are enough.
- Ancient city of Troy: A visit of a few hours with a guide's commentary.
- Assos: Again a few hours for the Temple of Athena and the acropolis, plus travel time, as it lies further south than Troy.
The peninsula alone fills a day. Once you want to add the other three areas, a second day becomes unavoidable.
Option 1: Day trip, leaving overnight
The Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorials Tour is an intensive programme lasting about 22 hours. You leave Istanbul at midnight and arrive in Eceabat in the morning. After that, you visit:
- Kilitbahir, the Mecidiye fortifications, the Corporal Seyit Memorial and the Şahindere Martyrs' Cemetery
- The Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial, Morto Bay, Seddülbahir, the Sergeant Yahya Martyrs' Cemetery and Ertuğrul Bay
- A walk on Anzac Hill, the 57th Regiment Martyrs' Cemetery, Conkbayırı and the place where Atatürk's watch was hit
before setting off for home in the evening.
Who is it for? Schools that can take a single day off, high school students who can sleep on the coach, and corporate groups focusing solely on commemoration and visits to the martyrs' cemeteries.
Pros: You are away from school or work for just one day. With no accommodation needed, planning is simple. All the daylight hours are spent on the peninsula.
Things to bear in mind: An overnight journey, followed by a full day of walking and another long trip home, is not easy for everyone. It can be tiring for younger pupils and older participants.
Option 2: 1 night, 2 days, including Troy and Assos
The Çanakkale, Troy and Assos Tour splits the two days like this:
Day 1: We set off overnight for Assos. After breakfast you visit the Acropolis of Assos and the Temple of Athena, and hear about the part linked to Aristotle's school of philosophy. After lunch comes the ancient city of Troy and the Wooden Horse, then in the afternoon the Archaeological Museum, Çimenlik Castle, the Naval Museum, the Nusret minelayer and Aynalı Çarşı in Çanakkale. Dinner and the overnight stay are at the hotel.
Day 2: After an early breakfast we leave the hotel. Starting from Eceabat, we visit the Corporal Seyit Monument, Kilitbahir Castle, the Namazgâh and Mecidiye bastions, Şahindere Martyrs' Cemetery, the Martyrs' Memorial, the Sergeant Yahya Monument and Ertuğrul Cove. After a lunch break we go on to Anzac Cove, Arıburnu, the Monument of Respect to the Turkish Soldier, Kanlı Sırt, the 19th Division Headquarters, the 57th Regiment Cemetery and Conkbayırı. After free time in Eceabat we head back to Istanbul.
Who is it for? Schools that want to bring ancient history into the curriculum too, middle school groups, families looking for a calmer pace, and companies.
Pros: The memorial visits are made early in the morning with a well-rested group. The story of 18 March begins at the Nusret minelayer and Çimenlik Castle in the town centre and is completed on the peninsula the next day, which makes it easier to tell the story as a whole.
Things to bear in mind: You need two days off and accommodation planning. The first day also starts with an overnight departure.
Questions to help you decide
- What is the average age of the group? High school and adult groups manage a day trip comfortably; for younger ages, two days is more balanced.
- Are Troy and Assos in the curriculum or among your interests? If so, the two-day programme brings two eras together in one trip.
- Which season is it? In months with short days, a programme with an overnight stay makes better use of daylight. For choosing the season, see our article When to visit Çanakkale.
- How much time off can you take? For schools, this is usually the deciding factor.
Transport note: how do we cross the strait?
From Istanbul, the Gallipoli Peninsula is reached by road through Thrace, while Assos and Troy lie on the Anatolian side of the strait. That is why the two-day programme involves one crossing of the strait. The crossing method and times are confirmed on the day of the tour depending on the weather and sailings; we take care of this planning for you.
Do you need more than two days?
Independent travellers can stay longer in Çanakkale and add nearby routes such as Bozcaada, Gökçeada or the Kaz Mountains. These are not part of our catalogue programmes, though. If you have a different length or route in mind for your group, we finalise the programme together at the quote stage; you can write to us via our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see Çanakkale in one day?
The main memorials and cemeteries on the Gallipoli Peninsula can be visited in one day on a day trip that leaves overnight. To see Troy, Assos and the town centre as well, you need a second day.
How many hours does the Çanakkale day trip take?
In our catalogue programme, the Çanakkale Memorials day trip departs at midnight and takes about 22 hours.
Is accommodation included on the Çanakkale, Troy and Assos tour?
Yes. The programme is 1 night, 2 days; one night in a hotel, with dinner and breakfast at the hotel, is included.
Which is better for a school trip?
Both options suit high school groups. For younger ages, or for schools that also want to see Troy and Assos, the 1 night, 2 days programme offers a more balanced pace.
