When to Go to Bodrum: Weather, Sea and Crowds Month by Month

If you want to swim but stay away from the summer crowds, the most balanced times for Bodrum are the first half of June and September to early October. July and August are hot, lively and crowded: ideal if you are after nightlife, tiring if you are looking for peace and quiet. November to March appeals to those who want to see the town itself, its museums and local life rather than the sea.

Bodrum through the seasons

Spring: March, April and May

In spring the peninsula turns green, the tangerine groves blossom and the weather is perfect for walking. For most people the sea stays cool until the end of May; if you plan to swim, your chances improve towards the end of the month. Some beach businesses and seasonal restaurants may not have opened yet, but you can explore the castle, the ancient theatre and the bazaar in comfort. For keen photographers, there are many days of soft light and clear air.

Early summer: June

June is the month the season opens but has not yet peaked. The sea starts to warm up, the days are long and the evenings bring a cool breeze. Once schools close, it gets noticeably busier in the second half of the month. For families, the first weeks of June offer a comfortable window, both for the weather and for finding space on the beaches.

Midsummer: July and August

Bodrum's liveliest period. Nightlife, concerts and marina events are in full swing. On the other hand:

  • The midday heat makes sightseeing outdoors hard work.
  • Traffic builds up on the main roads and the roads to the villages.
  • You need to reserve early at beaches and popular restaurants.
  • The northerly summer wind can bring choppy days to the south coast.

If you are going in these months, shift your sightseeing to the mornings and evenings and spend the middle of the day in the sea or in the shade.

Autumn: September and October

For many travellers, this is Bodrum's best time. The sea, warmed all summer, stays pleasant in September, and the crowds thin out from the middle of the month. Sunny days are still possible in early October, but towards the end of the month the chance of rain and the shorter days affect your plans. September is an excellent month for adult groups who want to combine a quiet beach holiday with a cultural trip.

Winter: November to February

In winter Bodrum turns from a holiday resort into a quiet Aegean town. Many seasonal businesses close, but shopkeepers, fishermen and local restaurants in the centre keep going. There are rainy and windy days; yet walking along the castle walls on a sunny winter's day or having a quiet lunch in Gümüşlük is a completely different experience. The tangerine harvest also falls in winter.

The right time for your purpose

  • Swimming and sunbathing: Late June to late September.
  • A quiet beach holiday: The first half of June, the second half of September.
  • Nightlife and events: July and August.
  • Culture and walking: April, May and October.
  • Seeing local life: November to March.
  • Boat trips: June to September, when the sea is warm and the wind relatively light.

Watch out for public holidays

Public holidays and long religious holiday (bayram) periods quickly make Bodrum busier, whatever the season. Accommodation, transport and boat trips can be booked up well in advance on these dates. If your dates are flexible, going just before or after the holiday week lets you enjoy the same weather in a much more relaxed setting.

How to keep an eye on the weather

Although Aegean weather patterns are generally predictable, the wind can change boat trip and beach plans from day to day. We recommend checking the Turkish State Meteorological Service forecasts a few days before you go and, for a boat trip, confirming the boat's route on the morning of departure. Even in summer, keeping a light extra layer with you is a good precaution for windy evenings.

Once you have decided to go, transport is next: in our article how to get to Bodrum we cover road, air and getting around the peninsula. For those who want to see a different corner of the Aegean in September, our Aegean tour covering Alaçatı and Ephesus could also be an alternative.

Timing during the day

Whichever month you go in, the time of day also shapes your plans in Bodrum. Early mornings are ideal for visiting the castle, the ancient theatre and the bazaar, as they are both cool and quiet. In summer, the middle of the day is best spent in the sea or in the shade. Late afternoon light is the most beautiful time to photograph the town's white houses and bays. Sunset is almost an event in Bodrum: in Gümüşlük and Turgutreis on the west coast, people gather on the shore for the moment. Nightlife in summer starts late.
