When to Go to Abant: Abant Lake in All Four Seasons

You can visit Abant Lake in all four seasons, but each one offers a different experience: the yellow and red of the forest in autumn, quiet snow-covered shores in winter, fresh green in spring and cool forest air in summer. Autumn is the most popular time for photography, while late spring and early autumn stand out for a comfortable walk. Whatever the season, weekdays are quieter.
Autumn: the season of colour
Abant is at its most photographed in autumn. The deciduous trees around the lake turn yellow, orange and red; mixed with the evergreen pines and firs, they create a colourful reflection on the surface of the lake. In the morning there may be mist over the lake, which adds extra depth to the view.
The weeks when the colours peak vary from year to year; the general trend is that October and early November stand out. Weekends at this time can be crowded.
What to wear: Layered clothing, a light jacket and a raincoat. Mornings and evenings are noticeably cool.
Winter: the snowy lake
In winter, Abant takes on a fairy-tale look with its snow-covered trees and quiet shores. In cold spells the surface of the lake may freeze partly or completely; however, never step onto the frozen lake. The thickness of the ice cannot be predicted.
In winter there may be snow and ice on the roads, so you need to check travel conditions in advance. When the footpath is covered in snow, progress is slower; waterproof boots with non-slip soles are essential.
What to wear: A waterproof coat and boots, gloves, a beanie, a scarf and spare socks.
Spring: the forest wakes up
In March and April the snow melts and the forest slowly turns green. In May, nature comes fully to life; meadows and trees are covered in fresh green. This is a very good time for walking: the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, and there are fewer crowds than in summer and autumn.
Rain can be frequent in spring. After rain, the earth paths around the lake can be muddy, so waterproof shoes will make things easier.
What to wear: A windbreaker or raincoat, a light fleece and walking shoes.
Summer: a cool escape from the city
In summer, Abant is a cool refuge for anyone who wants to escape the Istanbul heat. Walking around the lake in the shade of the forest, having a picnic and relaxing in the greenery are the pleasures of this season. Days are mild, but the air cools noticeably in the late afternoon.
Summer weekends are among Abant's busiest times. For a quiet day, choose a weekday.
What to wear: Comfortable clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a light cardigan for the evening.
What time of day?
The time of day changes the experience as much as the season. Early in the morning the lake is still and the reflection of the trees is at its clearest; in cool weather, the mist over the lake is also typical of these hours. At midday the light is harsh, but the air is at its mildest for walking. In the late afternoon the light softens and long shadows stretch along the shore. On the tour programme you arrive at Abant around midday, which is a comfortable time for a walk.
Which season suits whom?
- Photography enthusiasts: Autumn, especially October, and the morning hours.
- Those who want snowy scenery: January and February, checking road conditions.
- Those who want a comfortable walk: May, June and September.
- School groups: Spring and autumn, when schools are open; an outdoor lesson is more productive when the weather is mild.
- Corporate groups: Summer and early autumn are good for a team day spent outdoors.
Which season should you plan the tour for?
TatiliYakala's Abant, Maşukiye and Gölcük tour is a nature day trip: a lavish village breakfast in Maşukiye in the morning, a lake tour and nature walk at Abant Lake at midday, and lunch and free time at Gölcük Lake in the afternoon. As the programme takes place outdoors, the season directly shapes how the day goes.
When choosing a date, think about the following:
- What the group expects: Colour, snow or a comfortable walk?
- Length of the day: Days are short in winter; as the programme is planned with a 06:00 departure and a 20:00 arrival, part of the return journey is in the dark.
- Weather risk: Snow and ice in winter and rain in spring can affect the programme. We finalise the right date and programme for your group together at the quotation stage.

Abant or skiing in winter?
If you want nature and snowy scenery in winter but are not planning to ski, Abant is a good choice. If you would like to try skiing, have a look at our Kartepe ski guide, which also starts the day with breakfast in Maşukiye. Other winter options are on our Ski holidays page.
