When to Go to Ağva and Şile: A Guide to Seasons, Clothing and Preparation

The most comfortable times to visit Ağva and Şile are usually late spring, early summer and early autumn: the weather is good for walking, the stream banks are green and breaks by the sea are a pleasure. Midsummer is lively but crowded, while winter is quiet but windy and cool. Whichever season you choose, dressing in layers and bringing a light raincoat for the changeable weather of the Black Sea coast will make things easier.
Ağva and Şile through the seasons
Spring
In April and May the forest turns green and the stream banks come to life. The wooded road around Polonezköy is especially beautiful at this time. Mornings are cool and middays can be mild; the chance of rain is higher than in summer. For group trips, it is one of the richest times for nature, with relatively few crowds.
Summer
From late June to late August, Şile and Ağva are favourites with day-trippers and holiday-home owners from Istanbul. It is ideal for spending time by the sea, but at weekends the roads and beaches get crowded. As currents and waves on this stretch of the Black Sea coast can sometimes be strong, if you go in the sea, use only areas with lifeguards and follow the warning flags.
Autumn
September and the first half of October are a time when the weather is still mild after the summer crowds have gone. For corporate trips, this is often the most balanced time. From late October the colours in the forest change, but the days get shorter; you need to take this into account on a route with an evening return.
Winter
In winter Ağva and Şile go quiet. The wind and the cool are noticeable, and some businesses may offer a more limited service out of season. Even so, it is a lovely time if you want breakfast by a wood stove overlooking the stream or a walk to the lighthouse without the crowds; but a thick coat and waterproof shoes are essential.
What should you bring?
For a route that is a day trip but takes the whole day, a light but well-stocked bag is enough:
- Layered clothing: Cool forest air in the morning, sun at midday, coastal wind in the evening. A T-shirt, a light cardigan and a windproof top are enough in most seasons.
- Comfortable shoes: You walk around the lighthouse and castle and along the stream. Even in summer, closed shoes with non-slip soles are more comfortable.
- Light raincoat: The weather on the Black Sea coast can change quickly.
- Sun protection: A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Swimsuit and towel: If you plan to swim in the summer months.
- Cash: Cards may not be accepted in villages and at small stalls.
- Power bank: The day is long and there are plenty of photo stops.
What to taste and buy locally
Although they are right next to Istanbul, the settlements on the route have a village and coastal culture of their own.
- Village breakfast: One of the best-known experiences in the area. A long spread of village produce, jams and warm bread. On our tour, the programme includes a village breakfast in Cumhuriyet Köyü.
- Şile cloth: A fine, light cotton fabric unique to Şile. It is sold as shirts, covers and handmade items and is a popular souvenir.
- Seafood: As it is a coastal town, fish restaurants are common. Different fish are served depending on the season.
- Village produce: Depending on the season, you can find honey, jam and vegetables at roadside stalls.
Tips for groups
School and corporate groups
- Early departure: As the route is long, setting off early in the morning lets you see the stops without rushing.
- Plan the free time: There is free time in Şile and Ağva. Ask everyone to note the meeting time and place on their phone.
- Deciding on the boat trip: The boat trip on the Göksu Stream is optional and extra. Asking in advance how many of the group will take part makes organising easier.
Families
- Breaks for children: A day with an evening return is long for small children. A pillow so they can sleep in the vehicle and some snacks come in handy.
- Take care by the water: Keep a close eye on children by the stream and on the beach.
A ready-made programme or on your own?
You can also do this route by private car; but with a large group, the road, parking and meal arrangements quickly get complicated. The Polonezköy, Şile and Ağva Tour combines these stops in a single day that starts with a village breakfast and ends in Ağva. To read in detail about the order of the stops and what you see at each one, see our stop-by-stop route guide. The Istanbul City Tours page is also useful for other nature and city options.
Route and timing
When heading out on this route from Istanbul, traffic is the deciding factor. The Şile road can get busy, especially on summer weekends, so setting off early in the morning and planning the return for the evening makes the day easier. Our tour is designed on the same principle, with the return falling in the evening.
