  • Greece
  • The Acropolis of Athens

The monuments, consisting of the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike, were built in the 5th century BC under the building programme led by Pericles. The Acropolis was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.

  • Acropolis Museum

This modern museum at the foot of the Acropolis displays sculptures and reliefs from the temples on the hill. Its top-floor Parthenon Gallery shows the temple's friezes together with a view of the Acropolis.

  • Delphi

The Panhellenic sanctuary where the oracles of Apollo were given; the ancient Greeks considered it the centre of the world and the site of the 'omphalos' stone. The archaeological site of Delphi was added to the UNESCO list in 1987.

  • Temple of Poseidon at Sounion

Set on Cape Sounion at the southern tip of the Attica peninsula, the Temple of Poseidon overlooks the Aegean and is the classic stop for sunset excursions. Built in the Classical period, the temple still has some of its Doric columns standing.

  • Plaka

This historic district on the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, with its narrow streets, neoclassical houses and tavernas, is one of the oldest inhabited areas of Athens. Evening free time on tours is usually spent here.

Practical information

Best time to go

April to June and September to October are the best periods. In July and August temperatures in Athens get very high, which makes sightseeing hard in unshaded places like the Acropolis, and opening hours at archaeological sites may be restricted during heatwaves. Winters are mild, but Delphi, in a mountainous area, can be cool.
