Places to see

Countries

  • Morocco
  • Marrakech

Founded by the Almoravids in 1070–1072, the medina of Marrakech was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, full of street performers, are the city's symbols.

  • Casablanca

On the Atlantic coast, Casablanca is Morocco's economic centre and its most populous city. The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993 with its minaret overlooking the ocean, is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors.

  • Fez

The medina of Fes el-Bali, the old city of Fez founded by the Idrisids in the 8th–9th century, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. It is known for its narrow streets, its tanneries and the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque.

  • Meknes

Founded by the Almoravids as a military settlement in the 11th century, Meknes became the capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672–1727) of the Alaouite dynasty. The historic city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996; the Bab Mansour gate is its symbol.

  • Chefchaouen

A town at the foot of the Rif Mountains, founded in 1471. It is known for its houses painted in shades of blue and its narrow streets; the kasbah its founder built against Portuguese attacks still stands.

  • Tetouan

A city in northern Morocco, near the Mediterranean. Its medina, rebuilt by exiles from Andalusia after the Reconquista, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 for its Andalusian-influenced architecture.

  • Ouarzazate

A city south of the Atlas Mountains, known as the gateway to the Sahara; with its film studios, it has been the location for many productions. Ait Benhaddou, a mud-brick village in the same province, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.

  • Erfoud

An oasis town in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of eastern Morocco. Being close to Merzouga, the desert village by the Erg Chebbi dunes, it is one of the starting points for desert tours.

  • Tangier

A port city on the Strait of Gibraltar, close to where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. It is the birthplace of Ibn Battuta, the famous 14th-century traveller; its medina and kasbah are the main areas to explore.
