Places to see

  • Uludağ Ski and Leisure Centre

Uludağ in Bursa, 2,543 m high, was declared a national park in 1961. The ski resort lies between about 1,750 and 2,543 m and has cable car, chairlift and drag lift lines. Depending on snow, the ski season usually runs from late November to April or early May.

  • Cumalıkızık

An early Ottoman foundation (waqf) village at the foot of Uludağ, about 10 km east of Bursa. It is known for its narrow streets and timber-framed houses with oriel windows. In 2014 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of 'Bursa and Cumalıkızık: the Birth of the Ottoman Empire'.

  • Bursa Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami)

Commissioned by Sultan Bayezid I (Yıldırım) to commemorate the victory at Nicopolis, it was built between 1396 and 1399 by the architect Ali Neccar. It is known for its 20 domes resting on twelve piers, the ablution fountain in the middle of the interior and its calligraphy collection of 192 wall inscriptions.

  • Green Mosque and Green Tomb

Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed I (Çelebi), the mosque was begun in 1412 and completed in 1419–1420 under the supervision of Hacı İvaz Pasha. It is known for the tile decoration of its interior. The octagonal Green Tomb opposite, completed in 1421, is the burial place of Mehmed I.

  • Tophane

Tophane, in Bursa's historic citadel area, is home to the tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi. The 33 m Tophane Clock Tower behind the tombs opened in 1905; the area is a viewpoint looking down over the Bursa plain.

  • Tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi

Housed in a former Byzantine monastery building in Tophane, the tombs are the resting place of Osman Gazi, founder of the Ottoman state, and his son Orhan Gazi. Destroyed in the 1855 earthquake, they were rebuilt by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1863.

  • Uludağ cable car (optional)

The cable car line linking central Bursa with Uludağ. The first line opened in 1963; the 8.8 km line, renewed in 2013, serves four stations: Teferrüç, Kadıyayla, Sarıalan and Oteller. The journey between the end stations takes about 22 minutes.

Best time to go

Depending on snow, the ski season on Uludağ usually runs from late November to April or early May; the most reliable snow conditions are in the winter months.

What to bring and know

  • For skiing, bring a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a beanie and sunglasses; dress in layers.
  • The sun's glare off the snow is strong; use sunscreen.
  • If you do not have your own ski equipment, look into hire options at the resort in advance.
  • When visiting mosques and tombs in Bursa, wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees; women should bring a headscarf.

Uludağ as a school ski trip

Thanks to its closeness to Istanbul and the option of planning it as either a day trip or with an overnight stay, Uludağ is the most practical choice for school winter trips. The programme is designed so that students first take a short history tour in Bursa and then head for the snow. Equipment and instructor planning for students who cannot ski is done together with the teachers in charge of the group; if you send us the number of participants and the age range, equipment sizes can be prepared in advance.

  • Day trip or 1 night, 2 days option
  • Discounted ski pass, clothing and equipment from the ski hire shop
  • Culture and sport together, with a short history tour of Bursa
  • Advance planning with the teachers in charge of the group
