When to Go to Cappadocia? Cappadocia in Four Seasons

You can visit Cappadocia at any time of year, but for walking and sightseeing, the mild spring and autumn are more comfortable for most travellers. Summer is hot and crowded, while winter is cold but beautiful in a completely different way, with fairy chimneys covered in snow. The best approach is to choose based on what you want to see and who you are going with.
Cappadocia's climate in brief
Cappadocia lies on a high plateau in Central Anatolia. It therefore has the typical features of a continental climate: summers are dry and hot, winters cold and often snowy. The temperature difference between day and night is marked; you can feel the chill even on summer evenings. Rainfall is concentrated mostly in spring and winter.
Spring: green valleys, pleasant weather
From the end of March, the valleys start turning green and the fruit trees begin to blossom. April and May offer pleasant days for walking. The banks of the Melendiz River in the Ihlara Valley are especially lively at this time.
Things to keep in mind:
- Mornings and evenings can still be cool; dress in layers.
- Sudden showers are possible; carry a light raincoat.
- Spring is also when school trips are at their busiest.
Summer: long days, hot middays
In June, July and August the days are long and the sky is usually clear. This is an advantage if you want to see more places in daylight. On the other hand, there is little shade in the valleys at midday and the heat can be tiring. The underground cities are like a cool break at this time of year.
Tips for summer:
- A hat, sunscreen and enough water are essential.
- Light-coloured, thin clothes that still cover the shoulders protect you from the sun and are appropriate for visiting religious buildings.
- Take a light cardigan for the evenings.
Autumn: golden colours and quiet days
For many travellers, September and October are the most balanced time in Cappadocia. The summer heat is behind you, and the valleys take on yellow and red hues. As it is grape harvest time, you will notice grapes and pekmez (grape molasses) being made in the region. From November, the weather starts to get noticeably colder.
Winter: snowy fairy chimneys
Between December and February, Cappadocia is often covered in snow. White fairy chimneys and snowy valleys make for unique photos. The crowds are smaller than in other seasons.
What to know about a winter trip:
- It can be very cold; you will need a thick coat, a hat, gloves and waterproof shoes.
- Roads may be icy, so take care when walking.
- The days are short, so the sightseeing programme is planned around daylight.
- Weather-related cancellations of balloon flights are more frequent.

Which season for a balloon flight?
Hot air balloons can fly all year round, but every flight depends on that morning's wind and weather conditions. The chance of cancellation increases in winter. We explain where the balloon fits into our tour and what happens with cancellations in our Cappadocia balloon tour guide.
Packing by season
Whatever season you are in Cappadocia, allow for the temperature changes during the day. A short list:
- Spring: A light jacket or windbreaker, long-sleeved T-shirts, a folding raincoat, waterproof trainers.
- Summer: Light, breathable clothes, a hat, sunglasses, a cardigan for the evening and a light top for the underground city.
- Autumn: Layers; a warm top for the morning, a T-shirt for midday. After October you may need a coat.
- Winter: A thick coat, thermal base layers, a hat, gloves, a neck warmer and non-slip boots.
Common to every season: comfortable walking shoes, a small backpack, a water bottle and your personal medication. Choosing clothes that cover the shoulders and knees when visiting religious buildings is also a good habit.
Who are you going with?
- School groups: Spring and the first weeks of autumn offer days with balanced weather that are good for walking.
- Families: The summer months, when schools are on holiday, are practical, but the midday heat can tire small children; the morning and late afternoon parts of the programme are valuable.
- Corporate groups: Autumn is a balanced choice in terms of both weather and scenery.
Take daylight into account
Day length is often overlooked when choosing a season. In summer it stays light until late in the evening, and the last stops on the programme can be visited at leisure. In winter it gets dark early; so winter programmes leave less slack between stops, and the sunset view is enjoyed earlier in the day.
In which season does our tour run?
Our Cappadocia tour is a 2 nights, 3 days programme with hotel accommodation and is planned around the period your group prefers. The date, group size and hotel are agreed together at the quote stage. Whatever the season, the programme covers the key stops such as the valleys, the underground city, Avanos and Göreme Open-Air Museum.
