Set at about 925 metres at the foot of the Pirin Mountains in south-western Bulgaria, the town is about 160 km from Sofia. A gondola line opened in 2003 takes you from the town up to the ski area.

  • Pirin National Park

Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, the park is a mountainous area with more than 70 glacial lakes, waterfalls and coniferous forests. The Bansko ski area borders the park; when the boundaries were revised in 2010, the ski areas were left outside the heritage site.

Frequently asked questions

Can non-skiers join this tour?

Yes. Most ski resorts have slopes suitable for beginners and ski/snowboard schools. Lessons, equipment and ski passes are generally not included in the tour price and are purchased separately; those who do not want to ski can spend their time on snow walks, sledging or local sightseeing.

Do I need to bring my own ski equipment?

It is not required; ski resorts have rental points for skis, snowboards, poles, boots and helmets. Rental equipment is usually not included in the tour. We recommend bringing personal clothing such as a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, thermal underwear, a hat and sunglasses.

Is snowfall guaranteed?

No. The amount of snow and the opening and closing dates of the slopes vary each year depending on the weather; although some resorts support this with artificial snowmaking, natural snowfall is the deciding factor. We recommend following the resort's current snow and slope conditions before you travel.

Do I need a visa?

Visa and passport requirements vary by country, passport type and date. The country table on this page shows the general situation; we share the current requirements at the quote stage.
